A GTA Online-style online mode isn't expected at launch

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games' parent company, has framed GTA 6 in its financial communications as a "single-player experience" for launch. Rockstar has not announced any release date for an equivalent to GTA Online.

In the absence of an official announcement, several outlets (GamesRadar+, ScreenRant, Kotaku, Massively Overpowered) analyze the situation in light of the series' history: GTA V's online mode arrived roughly two weeks after the base game, while Red Dead Redemption 2's online component only launched in beta about a month later, with a full release much further out.

On that basis, several gaming press analysts project a possible window in late 2026 or sometime in 2027 for a GTA Online successor — this is not an official Rockstar Games announcement. Unconfirmed rumors also point to a new online mode supporting up to 32 simultaneous players.

Rockstar has indicated it intends to keep GTA Online active at least through the rest of 2026, suggesting the company doesn't plan to retire the mode before a successor is ready.
